Taking businesses where they need to goTaking businesses where they need to go – Peter Rosen, Business Mentor A sounding board for budding entrepreneurs Peter Rosen is one of UCL Enterprise' most experienced business mentors. He's been working with entrepreneurs and start-ups at UCL since 2010, providing them with the unparalleled support and advice gained from his own forty years of business experience. In 2015, Peter won the Best Mentor Award at the UCL Awards for Enterprise. Before joining UCL as a business mentor, Peter worked in the printing industry for four decades. After this, he saw a UCL Enterprise advert about business mentoring and approached Ruth Davis at UCL Enterprise to talk about it further. With extensive experience working with universities in Corporate Social Responsibility, Peter knew that his skills and knowledge would make a real difference to people starting out in the world of entrepreneurship. Forty years of operational experience means that he's seen it all.
Given my background, business mentoring was an obvious way for me to give something back to society, says Peter.Guidance and vision At UCL, Peter's chief role is as a reliable sounding board for entrepreneurs who need guidance and support. One of the companies he has mentored is Car Throttle, who he helped in its early days with a review of business plan and strategy. Car Throttle has since raised over $1.6m in funding and its website gets millions of views each month. Peter gets huge satisfaction in seeing businesses develop.
I aim to help people optimise the value of the situation they're working with, he says.Recently, he has been mentoring Fairy Tale Gourmet, a young company that creates cakes and sweets based on popular fairytales. His initial 12 hours with its founders, Armand Falcao and Fabio Buzzati, organised by UCL Enterprise Business Mentoring, has become over 250 hours, as he has become a reliable, regular support to them.
They're passionate about their business and they deliver continually. I still get excited to see them, Peter says.
UCL Enterprise knew exactly what we needed in a business mentor, and Peter's been brilliant. Every business should have a mentor, says Armand, Fairytale Gourmet's co-founder.Going the distance As a business mentor for UCL, Peter sees entrepreneurs face a variety of challenges. His work with Fairytale Gourmet can teach all wannabe entrepreneurs that the ability the go the distance is vital to succeed in business.
You need to be patient and accept that you're in it for the long haul, he says. Entrepreneurs need to get the foundation right to succeed, but they have to understand that that will take a bit of time.In the future, Peter intends to use his wisdom and vision to help more UCL Enterprise entrepreneurs realise their business dreams.
There's more support in the UK – and in London – for budding entrepreneurs than ever before. Entrepreneurship is in a robust state, and I'm fortunate to work with such driven, talented people, and to be recognised for it by winning the Best Mentor Award at UCL Enterprise.
